  Namaskar
We celebrate the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as 'Children's Day, birthday of Dr. Radhakrishnan
Sarvapalli as 'Teacher’s day', the same way the birthday of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan is celebrated as 'National
                                    th
Librarian's Day' in India on 12 August every year in remembrance of this national professor of library
science, who had spearheaded the library development in India.

Ranganathan came from a moderate background in British-ruled India. He was born in the small town of
Shyali (now known as Sirkazhi), in the state of Tamil Nadu.

He was a Mathematician and a Librarian. The Government of India awarded the Padmashri to Dr.
Ranganathan for his contribution on the five laws of Library and Information Science. These Five Laws of
Library Science are called the set of norms, precepts, and guides to good practices in librarianship. The
  five laws are:

  · First Law: Books are for use.
  · Second Law: Every reader his/her book.
  · Third Law: Every book its reader.
  · Fourth Law: Save the time of the reader.
  · Fifth Law: The Library is a growing organism.

CC (Colon Classification) the first major faceted library classification system was developed by him. He
was a university librarian and a professor of library science at Bansaras Hindu University (1945-47) and
professor of library science in University of Delhi (1947-55). He was the President of the Library
Association from 1944 to 1953. In 1957 he was elected an honorary member of the International Federation

  Association of Great Britain.

His final major achievement was the establishment of the Documentation Research and Training Centre
