Nurturing a Greener Tomorrow: Sustainability Education in Schools
In the hours of reflection, there is always one thing at the back of my mind:
What kind of world are we creating for our children? The role of educators is
to impart knowledge and most importantly, to inculcate values in students,
for many such qualities acquired during their school days will remain with
them forever. Of these essential values, one which is most relevant today is
sustainability—the belief that our actions have far-reaching impacts on the
world around and that it is within our power to create a future where people
and nature coexist harmoniously.
At Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Reliance Foundation School, Jamnagar, we
have witnessed the transformative power of integrating sustainability into
our curriculum. And beneath the excitement of planting trees or organizing a
recycling drive, lies a deeper lesson: recognition of the fact that sustainability
is not just a topic that has to be covered in a lesson, but a way of living.
Why is it so important to spread the theme of sustainability in our schools?
The answer lies in the very essence of education. Schools are not just a place
meant for mere bookish learning; they are, in fact, a place where the very
foundation of the character of a child is laid. By embedding sustainability, we
do prepare them for life by allowing them to negotiate a future world more
and more characterized by environmental challenges.
