Gopastami - Pichhwai for the festivals of cows

Pichhwai paintings usually depict the festival of cows .The purpose of Pichhwais other than artistic
appeal , is to narrate tales of Lord Krishna. As we all know that cows are an important part of our Hindu
mythology and play a significant role in the tales of Krishna.

Pichhwai is painted on large cloths and made to hang behind the main idol in temples. This textile is
produced for the festivals of cows ( Gopashtmi ) ,which occurs in the late Autumn to celebrate
Krishna's elevations from a young herder of calves into a perfect cowherd.
