KULJEET BAJAJ
Position of Women in Sikhism CO-ORDINATOR (6 TO 8)
SST - TGT
v The Sikh faith from its inception has upheld the equality for and dignity of women. Guru Nanak, the
founder guru of Sikh faith, emphasized the dignity of women in a way that was ahead of his time.
v Guru Nanak stated:
It implies “From woman, man is born; within woman, man is conceived; to a woman he is engaged
and married; through woman the future generations come; from woman, woman is born; without
woman there would be no one at all. So why call her bad from whom kings are born.
v Title given to a woman- KAUR which means PRINCESS.
In Sikhism, this title eliminates discrimination based on family caste and reinforces that all humans
are sovereigns and equal under God.
Importance of the four doors of the Golden Temple, Amristar
v There are four doors which mark four entrances to the temple. This symbolizes the Sikh belief in
equality and their view that all people are welcome into this holy place.
v The four doors of Gurudwara Sahib are known as:
· Door of Peace
· Door of Livelihood
· Door of Learning
· Door of Grace
v These doors are a symbol that people from all four points of the compass ( North, South, East, West)
are welcome and that members of all four castes ( Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, Shudras) are equally
welcome.
